Er…well, I suppose they are officially cats now since they are 2 1/2 years old. In human years does that make them teenagers? Cuteness and trouble is how you spell Kody and Kaelee.
It all began with Christmas. Or at least decorating the tree and a few other things. The tree is, after all, a giant thing with new toys hanging on it, right?
And then there is the little sleigh, which belonged to my mom, where a little Beanie Baby reindeer sits to “drive” the sleigh. It actually just looks like it belongs, but I digress.
Kody and Kaelee, our two sweet rescue kitties, are a little bit of trouble. More so since they had their food schedule changed and limited to help them lose weight. I rather doubt they appreciate a diet any more than a human does. Kaelee seems especially worried that she will be fed enough and on time.
Maybe this is why they are a tad more destructive this Christmas than they were last year? Only God knows what goes on in the minds of these two, but let me share with you a few of the adventures they’ve given us this week.
Several mornings we have awakened to find two little stuffed ornaments–a kitty and a bear–off the tree and somewhere on the floor. Behind the couch, in the kitchen, in the living room…tomorrow they may be somewhere else. Hang them back on the tree, and Kody goes after them again. Especially that kitty with the Santa hat!
Then there were those mornings when the lights on our pre-lit tree were hanging low and chewed through. Hubby is great at fixing things, so thankfully, he was able to get them working. But not even a stern warning keeps Kaelee from trying to chew the fake pine needles or the wires. I mean, when she’s hungry, she chews my hair or my necklace if I let her. She is beginning to learn what a spray water bottle looks like.
But yesterday took the prize in their drive-me-crazy antics. It started out to be a productive morning. I got a lot accomplished, and then came to the living room, flipped my background music to Airplay mode, and picked up my computer. But after two songs, the house grew suddenly quiet. The music stopped, and since I was the only one home, there was NO noise. I really hate a quiet house.
So I looked at the Airplay machine and the light was yellow instead of green. Not a good sign. The cats had been under the tree, so I thought they had somehow messed with the connection. But when I checked my computer, it said that I had no INTERNET. Hmm…and yet…the modem showed that our internet was fine.
I went to the source and checked the router. No flashing light. No light at all. I unplugged it. Restarted it. Checked the auxiliary router and the pink light was flashing. But I got nothing from the main one. Conclusion? The router was dead. I looked up to see how old they were and discovered they were four years old. Okay then. Since our modem died after two years and our dishwasher needs repair after less than two, I figured that electronics are just not what they should be and don’t last long.
Of course, this affected my work and everything connected to wifi, so I used my phone as a hotspot and began shopping for a new router. Hubby wasn’t home to help, so I searched for the best that could be delivered the fastest. Success! I found one that was fairly highly rated and could come by tonight. Good.
Hubby returned home (he substitute teaches at a middle school) around five in the evening, and I told him about our router woes. After dinner, he got on the floor and looked behind the TV, something I hadn’t done, because the cats weren’t behind the TV. They were under the Christmas tree. But wouldn’t you know it? One of them had stepped on the surge protector switch and turned it off! Once hubby flipped it back on, everything worked again. (Sorry Amazon! But I had to return the router unopened.) (More below the video – which won’t play until you click the link below.)

I don’t know why the Airplay worked when that connection had to have been tripped long before I hit the connect button, but it did. They must have chased a ball, which we found, behind the TV while I was dressing. I should have known because a few months ago they knocked the cable connection loose in the basement, which disconnected the cable. We were ready to call our provider when we discovered it.
Remind me again why we wanted kittens? Yeah. I know. They’re crazy, sassy, slightly destructive, persistent, curious, cute, and cuddly, which is why we wanted them in the first place! Cuddly is good. Cuddly and sweet is what we wanted. But as with most things in life, we take the good with the trouble. And they are definitely a little bit of trouble every single day.
Excuse me while I chase Kody from beneath the tree where he is intent on going after something!
Merry Kitten Christmas!
