Be the light in a dark world

“No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

The brightest light we can shine, the greatest good we can do, is to show the world God loves people by loving people.

That sounds so easy, doesn’t it? But we all know that there are people who are easy to love and those who are not. And it’s easy to talk about love. Not so easy to put into practice.

I think the reason for that is because God sets the bar high when He defines love. He tells us we are to be:

Patient. Kind. Never haughty. Or selfish. Or rude. Don’t demand our own way. Overlooks wrongs. Give freely. Sacrifice for the one loved. Believe the best. Always hope. Always trust. Never give up.

Then He tells us we’re to love:

Our neighbor. Our enemy. Our family. Our friends. Our fellow believers. Everyone. I don’t know about you, but loving like this is hard! And in truth, only God Himself has the ability to be so loving to everyone all of the time. We are His image bearers, but we are also works in progress. Loving takes work. It takes time.

But if we love like this, like Jesus did, we truly will be a light in a dark world.
