Behind the Scenes with Rebekah

When Rebekah’s name came up to add to When Life Doesn’t Match Your Dreams, I knew that at least the fictional scenes would not be so hard to write because I had written about her life in the Wives of the Patriarchs series.

But Rebekah wasn’t easy to write about then, and some things I’ve learned from her since were not the easiest things to learn. Can we just say that Rebekah was a control freak? I know it doesn’t seem that way in the beginning of her story. When she waters the camels for Abraham’s servant and has a pretty romantic marriage to Issac.

Things were probably pretty good between them before the twins came along.

Once Rebekah finally became pregnant and had these warring boys causing her body untold agony, she went to God for answers, and He told her that the older would serve the younger.

From the start Rebekah loved Jacob, her youngest over his older twin Esau, probably in part because of that prophesy. Or maybe because Issac love Esau best. (Never a good idea to play favorites with your children.)

But Rebekah was more than a mom who played favorites. She might have taught Jacob a bit of his deceitfulness, since she helped him deceive his own father. Perhaps Rebekah and her brother Laban (a lying cheater) came from a home that didn’t value honesty.

I think Issac, on the other hand, did. And when Rebekah helped Jacob deceive his father, life changed for her – dramatically.

SHE KNEW SHE WAS RIGHT. JACOB WAS PROMISED THE BLESSING.
ISSAC WANTED TO GIVE IT TO ESAU.
BUT IS IT EVER RIGHT TO DO THE WRONG THING FOR THE RIGHT REASON?
TOUGH QUESTION, YES?

Rebekah learned some hard lessons in her attempt to control what God could have handled on His own just fine. If she’d let Him. If she’d asked Him. Scripture doesn’t say she ever did that.

CONTROL FREAKS HAVE A HARD TIME LETTING GOD. AND LETTING GO.
THERE IS ALWAYS THAT ONE MORE ATTEMPT TO GET SOMEONE TO ACT OR SOMETHING TO CHANGE…IF I JUST…
IF I JUST DOESN’T WORK VERY WELL, DOES IT?

I hope you will join me in delving deeper into Rebekah’s story in When Life Doesn’t Match Your Dreams. One way or the other God makes His point that we are not the ones in control. But when we try…oh the messes we can find ourselves in! Rebekah is a good reminder of that point.
