Psalm 46:10-11 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.” Selah
These verses are such a comfort. The Psalm begins with the promise that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” And then the writer asks us to be still and know. If I’m busy, rushing around, it’s hard to know anything except what is on my mind at that moment. It is only when I am still that I start to know what God has to tell me.
Things might grow overwhelming at times. We all face such times, don’t we? But that is when we need His stillness and refuge most.
I love Habakkuk’s prayer (he was an Old Testament prophet) in chapter 3 of his book:
“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”
God is still on His throne. He is still in control. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge.
In the quiet. When no one else is around.
Be still.
