Freedom. We value that word, don’t we? Everyone who has it wants to keep it, and those who don’t, long for it. But did you know that you can live in a free country and be free to do whatever you please and still be enslaved?
The Bible tells us that “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”
So while we might look like we are free people, we are emotionally or spiritually or even physically enslaved to whatever has mastered us.
Are we addicted to something? Money? Sex? Drugs? Alcohol? Lying? Greed? Is there something in life that controls us, that consumes our thinking? Perhaps anger? Or fear? Hatred? Or lust?
Whatever we worship becomes our master. And those things I named above along with many others make terrible taskmasters. Where we might think we have control over our own destiny, if we have no self-control, we are kidding ourselves.
Jesus is a different kind of Master. He is Lord and has the right to be in control of our lives because He created them. But He is not like those things that enslave us and try to ruin us. He came to set captives free. To exchange our guilt for His forgiveness. Our fear for His peace. Our lusts for His love.
When we know Him, we become part of His family. A child of God. Not a slave to our cravings and broken lives. Free. Because the one who sets us free is the Father’s Son. And whom the Son sets free is truly free.
